Determined to curb the menace of indiscriminate waste disposal and promote a cleaner, healthier environment in Ojokoro Local Council Development Area. the Executive Chairman, Hon. (Barr.) Oluyemisi Adenike Rosiji, on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, partnered with the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) to strengthen enforcement against environmental offenders.
The partnership, unveiled at the Council Secretariat, also witnessed the inauguration of a Special Environmental Enforcement Corps, saddled with the responsibility of monitoring, apprehending and reporting residents who violate environmental sanitation regulations within the LCDA.
Speaking during the inauguration, Chairman Rosiji expressed concern over the persistent habit of indiscriminately dumping refuse on road medians, in drainage channels, along streets and on walkways.
She noted that such practices not only deface the environment but also create breeding grounds for pests, germs and disease-causing organisms, thereby posing serious risks to public health.
According to her, the era of indiscriminate waste disposal in Ojokoro must come to an end, stressing that the LCDA would no longer tolerate practices capable of undermining the health and wellbeing of residents.
She explained that the Council had engaged the services of the LNSC to apprehend environmental offenders, who would subsequently be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
¡°It has gotten to a time where people will be prosecuted for indiscriminately disposing of refuse. We must begin to take responsibility for the environment we live in.¡± she said.
The Chairman further urged residents to adopt responsible waste management practices, including sorting their waste and ensuring that different categories of waste are properly disposed of.
She encouraged residents with available spaces to cultivate gardens where biodegradable waste could be appropriately composted and converted into organic manure for plants.
Hon. Yemisi Rosiji emphasised that not all materials should be regarded as immediate waste, noting that some items could be reused, recycled or properly stored before eventual disposal.
She called on residents to see environmental cleanliness as a collective responsibility, stressing that government efforts could only succeed with the cooperation and responsible participation of the people.
Also speaking, the Supervisor for Environment, Hon. Olateju Adeoye, commended the Chairman for her determination to sanitise the environment and curb environmental violations across the LCDA.
He charged members of the Special Environmental Enforcement Corps to carry out their duties professionally, fairly and without intimidation, while also educating offenders on the reasons for their apprehension.
The Head of Environmental Health Services of the Council, Sanitarian Falade Idayat, urged the enforcement officers to ensure proper documentation of environmental offences.
She specifically advised them to obtain pictorial and video evidence of violations, as well as identify witnesses where necessary, noting that such evidence would be useful during prosecution in court.
In his remarks, the LNSC Ojokoro Commandant, Odulami Randle, assured the Chairman of the Corps’ commitment to effectively execute the assignment.
She disclosed that the LNSC had previously made efforts to curb indiscriminate waste disposal but had sometimes encountered resistance from community leaders who intervened on behalf of offenders.
The LNSC boss, however, expressed confidence that with the backing of the Council Chairman, enforcement would now be more effective and sustained.
The initiative is expected to strengthen environmental enforcement in Ojokoro LCDA, discourage indiscriminate waste disposal and promote a culture of responsible environmental management among residents.
