The Lagos State Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development has commended Ojokoro Local Council Development Area for the noticeable improvement in its environmental condition, following an inspection tour of markets, streets and drainage facilities within the LCDA.
The commendation came on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, when a team from the Ministry visited Ojokoro LCDA for an environmental assessment of the council area.
Led by Mr. Solasi, director, LG Monitoring, the team inspected key locations across the LCDA, including markets, roads and drainage channels, before meeting with the Executive Chairman, Hon. (Barr.) Rosiji Oluyemisi Adenike, at the Council Secretariat to present its observations and assessment.
Speaking during the meeting, Mr. Solasi commended the Council Chairman for the support being extended to traders and market communities, noting that the assistance had been well received and appreciated by the beneficiaries.
He, however, identified areas requiring further attention, particularly the Jankara Market, where he observed that the large population of traders and customers, coupled with the age and dilapidated condition of some structures, made the market due for comprehensive redevelopment.
According to him, the council could explore Private Sector Participation (PSP) to revamp and modernise the market, while the provision of a health facility, fire service unit and other safety infrastructure would improve the market’s appearance, enhance safety and potentially increase its revenue-generating capacity.
At Ayewadun Market, Kola, the team expressed concern over the poor hygienic condition of the meat-selling section and called for stronger monitoring by the council’s environmental officers to ensure compliance with sanitary standards.
The Ministry’s team also noted that the market was overdue for upgrading and urged the council to consider its redevelopment as part of its future plans.
The team commended the ongoing construction work at the abattoir at Irepodun Market, while also recommending the establishment of a medical facility at the location to cater to the health needs of traders and others who operate there.
A member of the inspection team, Sanitarian Akindele Abolade, also commended the administration for the improved environmental condition of roads within the LCDA.
He observed that refuse and other forms of dirt were no longer as prevalent on the roads as previously observed, describing the improvement as a positive development.
Sanitarian Abolade, however, urged the council to sustain the gains through regular enforcement and monitoring. He called for quarterly pest and vector-control exercises, closer scrutiny of fake and expired products in markets, as well as greater attention to the health and personal hygiene of traders and food handlers.
Responding, the Executive Chairman, Hon. Rosiji, appreciated the Ministry’s team for what she described as a meticulous inspection and objective assessment of the council’s environmental situation.
She assured the team of the council’s readiness to collaborate with the state government towards further improving sanitation and environmental standards across its markets.
The Chairman also disclosed that Jankara Market had been selected as the venue for the council’s next environmental sanitation exercise, signalling the administration’s intention to sustain the renewed focus on cleanliness and environmental compliance.
The inspection, according to the council, forms part of its ongoing efforts to improve environmental sanitation, strengthen market management and create safer and healthier spaces for residents, traders and visitors across Ojokoro LCDA.
